Long-Term Care Insurance
Long-term care insurance helps pay for the cost of nursing homes, assisted living, and in-home care, protecting your retirement savings from being wiped out by care expenses.
The Cost Medicare Will Not Cover
About 70 percent of people over 65 will need some form of long-term care. Medicare covers less than 9 percent of nursing home expenses nationwide. The average cost of nursing home care in Arizona runs $7,600 a month and climbing. Without a plan, the cost lands on family members, who either pay out of pocket or become unpaid caregivers themselves. Long-term care insurance closes that gap before the crisis arrives.
About 70 percent of people over 65 will need some form of long-term care. Medicare does not cover it. The question is not whether to plan for it, but how.
The Coverage Options We Compare
We help you evaluate every type of LTC coverage and recommend what fits your situation. The policy types each have tradeoffs.
- Traditional LTC policies, straightforward coverage with the lowest premium but a use-it-or-lose-it design
- Hybrid life-and-LTC policies, a death benefit if you do not need care and an LTC pool if you do
- Partnership policies, state-recognized policies that provide additional asset protection if you ever need ALTCS
- Multi-carrier shopping, comparing premium, benefit period, daily benefit, and inflation rider across the strongest insurers
- Estate-plan coordination, aligning the policy with your trust, your retirement plan, and your spouse's coverage
Why It Matters
The belt-and-suspenders approach is to purchase coverage while you are healthy enough to qualify and, when the time comes, make sure you receive every benefit you are entitled to under Medicare and Medicaid. Waiting until a diagnosis often means coverage is no longer available at any price.
